The query goes straight to the TLD's WHOIS server on port 43 (a built-in list for common TLDs, IANA for the rest; IPs start at ARIN), then follows the referral to the registrar. No third-party API.

How it works

We send a raw WHOIS query over port 43 to the registry for the domain’s TLD — always for the registrable domain, never a subdomain — and parse the registrar, status, dates and name servers.
